Trip Notes | Trabzon | Hagia Sophia Church (Museum-Mosque)

It's believed that this church was built during the reign of the Komnenos state's emperor Manuel 1 (1238-1263)

It's one of the most important buildings of the post Byzantium era in this region. The bell-tower stunted to the left of the church was built in 1427.

This building which has a high dome in the centre was built on the base of a square-cross plan. It has a nartex.

The stone works and embossed desing on the porched entrances on three sides, and the mosaics and depicitions on the inside walls give an idea about features of that time.

This church was converted into mosque and was given to the religious foundation after Fatih Sultan Mehmed had conquered Trabzon in October 26.1461.

This mosque being ruined in 1864 was repaired with the approval and efforts of Riza Efendi from Bursa who was on duty to inspect the whole Anatolia.

During the world War I. it was used as a depot and military hospital. Then it served as a mosque again till 1958.

Now the building has been open to the visitors as a museum since two years after the restoration (1958-1962) whit the joint effort of Edinburg University and Directorate of Vakiflar.
